National Apprenticeship Week 2017: Meet Vicky

It’s Day 4 of National Apprenticeship Week, and today we hear from Vicky Coleman, a Proposal Manager within NG Bailey’s Engineering Services division.  Vicky joined NG Bailey’s Bid and Proposal apprenticeship in 2013 following four years working for the Department for Work and Pensions.  Vicky’s decision to begin an apprenticeship after working full time for a number of years was driven by the opportunity to gain qualifications whilst still being able to earn income.

We asked Vicky what she thought the benefits have been of completing the apprenticeship in comparison to a job without training.

vicky coleman“I’ve gained my knowledge with full support from a company who were greatly invested in the apprenticeship scheme as they had a plan of what they wanted to achieve, meaning I’ve been able to learn and experience more than I would have in a normal job.  I’ve learnt the industry and the company without being expected to do the job immediately, and with my colleagues appreciating that I was in a learning period.  I now have career aspirations that are achievable within the industry that I’m working; I can see a clear path of where I’m going and so far I’m on track. The Apprenticeship has opened up new opportunities for me that I may not have otherwise known about or been able to move into.”

When asked what she had learned from the apprenticeship experience, Vicky told us:

“Take any opportunity for learning that you can, you never know when the information will help you in the future. If there’s something you want to learn, then ask; this can support your career to know in which direction you want to head. A Bid and Proposals Apprenticeship is a great way to get into the industry and to learn what you need to know. Once qualified, it’s a demanding role, where you’ll need to use a range of skills to support your business in work winning, but you’ll get satisfaction from your results and constant learning as well as a fulfilling career.”

Vicky completed her apprenticeship in 2015 and moved into a Proposal Coordinator role.  In October 2016 she was promoted to Proposal Manager and currently works across demanding bid teams, developing content, managing win theme development and messaging and consulting on bid strategy for key deals across the group.

Congratulations Vicky!
